Brazil, the country with less indigenous population

The data showed that last year alone, there were 87 cases of suicide among indigenous people in the country, with more than half (45) occurred in Mato Grosso do Sul. Between 2000 and 2015, there were only 752 cases in that state. The report further recorded 137 murders of indigenous people in 2015 - a quarter of the total (36) in Mato Grosso do Sul.

Nearly 600 indigenous children under five died in the same period, in general, easily treatable diseases like pneumonia, diarrhea and gastroenteritis. The mortality rate of children up to one year in Mato Grosso do Sul, 26 per thousand live births, is double the national average.

Government inefficiency in the demarcation of indigenous lands (IT) and the provision of basic services such as health and education, is noted by the report as the main reason for the systematic violation of rights.

Brazil has an indigenous population of around 900,000 people, or 0.5% of the total population, according to Census 2010. That makes Brazil the Latin American country with the lowest number of indigenous. And even more shocking, it is also the country with the largest number of indigenous ethnic groups, 305, also according to the census.

CIMI's report today is one of the few sources of information on situations of violence against indigenous peoples in Brazil.

The research coordinator, Lucia Helena Rangel, assesses: "This degree of perversity against the indigenous population comes from several sides. The farmer, the henchman, any citizen who believes in the right to kill a child, "referring to the murder of Victor Kaingang, two years, died in the lap of his mother in December 2015 to the bus station city Imbituba (SC).

"The physical deaths, physical violence, stem from the struggle for land, are derived from the struggle for the demarcation" AVALIO fiscal Luciano Maia, coordinator of the 6th Chamber of Coordination and Review of Federal Public Ministry, during the release of the report. "As a result, we can not rule out as part of the problem, and at the same time a solution for all fight to recognize indigenous land rights to their traditional occupation," he said.

Two days before the publication of the report, the Guarani Kaiowá indigenous community of Kurusu Ambá in Coronel Sapucaia (MS), suffered the attack fifth year. Gunmen opened fire and placed in the area (read more). In Brasilia, Elson Canteiro, the people Guarani Kaiowá, highlighted the situation of indigenous people in the state. "Today we live in a very critical moment, because we live in a recovery area. We are suffering daily with serious violations, "he said.

Marta Azevedo, demographer on indigenous peoples and former president of the National Indian Foundation (Funai) expert, lack of political will of government agencies to consolidate information systems on these stocks. "It is absurd not have official figures of annual public child-juvenile and infant mortality and mortality from violent causes among the indigenous population," he complained in an interview with ISA.

The first part of the report brings together the cases of violence against indigenous heritage, including delays in the demarcation of indigenous lands, disputes over rights to land invasions, illegal exploitation of resources and damage to property.

In 2015, CIMI recorded 18 conflicts over land rights. Again, the champion was the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, with ten records. 55 cases of invasions, illegal exploitation of resources and damage to property were also raised. Most (18) was in Maranhao, which continues, in 2016, similar cases (read more). 52 cases of lack of health care, which most of whom were in Maranhao, with 11 appearances were also collected.

"This report brings, in our assessment, three characteristics: the omission like the assistance of communities and especially the demarcation of indigenous lands; perversity in relation to violence; the omission like the reality of the devastation of indigenous areas, "explains Roberto Liebgott, Coordinator of the Southern Region of CIMI.
