Selena Quintanilla: ready for the 21st century recognition
The museum decided to immortalize the Grammy award-winner and cultural icon after an outpouring of fan appreciation.
The late Tejano singer's family, including Selena's brother, A.B. Quintanilla, and older sister, Suzette Arriaga, were on hand to celebrate the big reveal at Madame Tussauds Hollywood on Tuesday. The event, which saw hundreds of gleeful fans cheer on the life-like figure, also marked the 21st anniversary of the GRAMMY winner’s fifth and final studio album, Dreaming of You.
The petition came true and Selena Quintanilla now has her own wax figure at Madame Tussauds! The wax museum had announced in mid-July that it would unveil the Queen of Tejano Music’s statue on Tuesday, August 30 at their Hollywood, California location after her fan’s online petition from 2015 gathered over 10,000 signatures and caught their attention.
"At Madame Tussauds, our figures represent icons who have made a significant impact on our culture,” said Colin Thomas , General Manager of Madame Tussauds Hollywood. “That perfectly describes Selena. Her influence has transcended generations, and her passionate fans continue to be inspired by her to this day. We recognize this and in response, we are proud to join her fans in celebrating her legacy by immortalizing her," he added.
It is estimated that the cost of the wax figure was around $350,000. Selena is dressed in an outfit she used to perform at the Memorial Coliseum in Corpus Christi back in February 1993. The show was recorded and later released as an album with the name “Selena Live!” which earned her her first Grammy award f or Best Mexican/American Album in 1994.
"She inspired a lot of people and it seems to move from one generation to the next so it's constantly moving forward and thanks to the fans that help perpetuate her, her legacy, her memory, her music and those kinds of things forward — I think it's just an amazing thing what they've done," her widower Chris Perez said.
This is a tribute for the Latin singer and her early ended career, hopefully she will remain in our minds for a long while.
