Be part of the change and reduce your plastic consumption

Plastic is a material that is commonly found in almost every item and it’s contaminating our environment

During the month of May, the United Nations Environment launched the #CleanSeas campaign to bring together governments, business, and individuals in the fight against marine waste. Ten countries have already joined the camping including Costa Rica, Grenada, Panama, and Uruguay.

Evidence shows that the chemicals involved in the production of plastic might end up harming people and the environment. Most of the plastic that is thrown in the garbage eventually ends up in the water supply contaminating the drinking water and the oceans. It is estimated that by 2050, the weight of plastics in the ocean will be greater than that of all fish.

To join the campaign consumers can easily follow recommendations to help them reduce their plastic consumption and avoid further damage to the world.

For example, when grocery shopping, avoid purchasing packaged fruit and vegetables. Remember, once you consume the product, it does not mean the cycle has also ended for its plastic container. Some South American countries, like Colombia and Argentina, banned the use of plastic bags in supermarkets. Instead, use a textile shopping bag that will last longer.

If you’re in a restaurant, do not use a straw. However, if the sanitary conditions of the cups or bottles are a concern for you, opt for paper straws which are 100% biodegradable, according to ECOPIT.

Stop wondering how to become more of an environmentally friendly consumer and begin applying this easy recommendation to your daily life. The planet, as well as future generations, will thank you.
