Colombia, Land of cycling Heroes

cycling Heroes

The South American country has been characterized for being an international powerhouse of the cycling world.

Colombia occupies the second place in the world ranking of the 'World Tour'.  It leads the list with 2034 points, along with Australia which has 2555 points.

The practice of this sport has been present in the history of the country since the 1950’s. It gave rise to big legends like Martín Emilio Cochise Rodríguez, Lucho Herrera, Javier 'El Ñato' Suárez, Rigoberto Uran, and Nairo Quintana, among others. All these beetles (term commonly used within Colombia towards the local cyclists) have been a milestone, and they have left an unblemished mark in the history of the sport. It is important to note that they are also athletes very close and dear to hearts of the fans, leaving the name of the country in lights.

The cycling fever is increasing, including road cycling, track cycling, mountain biking, and BMX.  The sensation of love from the fans is contagious and it manages to attract almost all citizens throughout the territory.

On the other hand, many people see this sport as an opportunity to become well-known and excel both nationally and internationally. Meanwhile, some see it as the only alternative and opportunity to enjoy an exercise that fights stress and is environmentally friendly.

The bicycle, an incentive for health and the environment.
Cycling provides both physical, mental, and emotional health. Among its advantages we can find: aids cardiovascular function, helps improve motor coordination, reduces stress levels and improves mood, as well as an excellent alternative to reunite family and friends in the same space (sport).

Latin American cities such as Santiago de Chile, Bogota, and Rio de Janeiro, among others throughout the continent, promote programs, projects, and policies that encourage the use of bicycles. The initiative helps manage the emission of carbon monoxide and dioxide pollution, hydrocarbons, and other gases that contribute the destruction of the ozone layer making it the best ecological alternative to reducing contamination in the environment.
