The announcement of the “Uncharted” movie generated many expectations and uncertainties. It is an acclaimed video game saga. Nathan Drake’s story has been highly regarded by fans and critics in general. So the source material was good for an adaptation, but did they do it the right way?

The first thing to note is that the film is inspired and based on some original ideas from video games. However, this does not mean that they are literal copies. This can be seen in the fact that this film is a prequel to video games, where we can see a young Nathan Drake.

Therein lies the choice of the protagonist: Tom Holland, who is difficult to see in a role other than Spider-Man. However, he manages to captivate the audience, especially when interacting with the other characters.

“The success of Uncharted”

Uncharted is not a cult movie, far from it. This was clear from the choice of director Ruben Fleischer, who was responsible for “Welcome to Zombieland” and “Venom”. However, this does not mean that it is bad: it is a very fun and fast-paced film that will keep you entertained without taking your eyes off the screen.

The fact of choosing Tom Holland has its success. The film has dramatic scenes but also seeks to contribute its share of humor. That’s where the interaction with Mark Wahlberg, who puts himself in the shoes of the charismatic Sully, achieves its goal. His character is practically identical to the one we were able to meet in the famous video game saga.

Now, one of the questions that everyone wanted to be answered: is Tom Holland a great Nathan Drake? Well, like any adaptation, it is clear that there are very marked differences. The most notable thing is the age difference because here we meet the much younger version of the legendary video game adventurer character.

However, the characteristics of his personality are very well interpreted. It is a very human character, who usually has quite particular humor. It is cheerful and fun because he is aware that he suffers many difficulties in his adventures. Therefore, Tom Holland was a wise choice for this role, as he manages to convey these emotions.

On the other hand, one of the positive points of the film: is the action scenes. “Uncharted” was always characterized by having great moments, like the mythical train scene. Although it is not used in the same context as video games, we reiterate: it is a non-linear adaptation.

Also noteworthy is the work of Antonio Banderas, who plays the villain of the film very well. His character is that of a cold tycoon with many ambitions, which demonstrates the essence of “Uncharted”: the search for ancient objects and all the disputes that arise from those objectives.

And therein lies another of the advantages that “Uncharted” has. At no point does the film seek to be anything more than a classic adventure movie. Of course, it takes inspiration from the video game saga, but it could easily work without them existing. This makes the film aware of its own genre, knowing what to do and what not to do.

What does this lead to? In that, there are no secondary plots that do not contribute much to the basic story. For example, some action scenes are present where the laws of physics do not seem to work, as happens with the impossible jumps. However, since we understand that it is the genre itself, we can have fun and have a great time.

Finally, there is an element where the film surpasses the video games: the protagonist’s relationship with Sam, his brother. This character appeared as a surprise in the fourth installment, but here we know him from the beginning. This makes the bond between them feel much more natural, so we get to explore Nate’s sentimental side.

In short, “Uncharted” is a great film that does not seek to be pretentious. Whether it’s because you’ve enjoyed video games or because you want to have fun with an adventure film, it’s one of the essentials to watch this year.
