COP24's conclusions: between uncertainty and hope

The COP24 (United Nations Organization Climate Conference) was held from December 2 to 14 of this year in Katowice, Poland. The most expected in the conference, and the reason for which it was made, was the implementation of the Paris Agreement, which seeks to limit the increase in global temperature to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This is why approval was given to a book of instructions with which the process will begin.

One of the issues that most concerned the scientific community around the world was Donald Trump's announcement to withdraw from the agreement during the COP24 framework. Indeed, the delegation of the United States remained firm in questioning and rejecting the research and scientific evidence that points to the imminent global warming and its catastrophic consequences. The United States led a group of countries that also disagreed and, like the United States, withdrew from the Paris Agreement. These were, in their majority, Arab countries.

On the other hand, Brazil announced its resignation to host the COP25, which implies a concern for the fight against environmental change taking IGNORE INTO account that Brazil has always been an important piece in the negotiation of these issues. The reason why they resigned, according to the delegation, was because organizing the conference is very expensive. However, this also has to do with the rise of Bolsonaro to power and with his ideas regarding climate change that are not far from those of Donald Trump. Chile will be the new headquarters of the COP25 in 2019.

Some of the agreements reached were that both the poor and the rich countries must put IGNORE INTO operation projects to mitigate environmental change, which, from 2020, developed countries will financially support developing countries with an amount of US $ 100,000 million per year.

According to El Espectador, China asked more time to implement the objectives for the poorest and developing countries, since these are the ones that most disagree with the Paris Agreement. This is important, considering that China is one of the countries that generates more environmental pollution.

During the conference there were 160 countries that presented their plans and objectives for the reduction of pollution at the level of gas emissions, the rest of the countries committed to present these maximum objectives until 2020. At COP24, the social consequences were also discussed that generate little interest in climate change, for which a call was made to raise awareness about human rights and to face the recent rise of ultra-rightism and its conservative risks.

In addition, in the framework of the COP24, Colombia won the award for the Carbon Pricing Champion Award, which, according to Semana, "recognizes the leadership of the government in the fight against climate change through the fixing of the carbon price and compensation". The Minister of Environment and Development, Ricardo Lozano, was in charge of receiving the award.
