In a surprising move, Los Angeles Clippers signed Kawhi Leonard to a four-year, $142 million max contract in free agency and then agreed to obtain Paul George in a hit trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder. The moves seem to have propelled the Clippers to the number one team in Los Angeles.

The Clippers, who spent all season setting up the fundamentals to sign Kawhi, got what they worked for despite little attention. They probably sold Leonard, a California native, the idea of being a team leader was better than playing second to LeBron James at the Lakers. However, the Clippers had a problem; they needed a reliable back up to Leonard. George, another California native, fixed it quickly.

Losing Leonard to the Lakers would have further rooted the Clippers as the second team in Los  Angeles; instead, this immediately makes them one of the top candidates for the 2020 title. Leonard and George will join experienced coach Doc Rivers and a tremendous supporting cast of Patrick Beverley, Lou Williams, and Montrezl Harrell. That team has excellent shooting and defenders, while also being supplemented by L.A.'s other quality supporting cast members.

Also, the Lakers have not been doing so well, and this the Clippers' moves may be devastating. Yes, the Lakers did recruit Anthony Davis to join James. However, Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Jimmy Butler, and D'Angelo Russell all decided to go elsewhere.

This superstar rejection made the Lakers resigning Rajon Rondo, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and JaVale McGee. The Lakers also managed to steal Danny Green from the Raptors. Except for Davis, this seems to be the same unmotivated and inconsistent supporting cast Lebron had last season Thus, the Lakers, as opposed to the Clippers, now seem excessively reliant on only two players, a situation that may finally make the Clippers the "big brother" in Los Angeles.
