Spain: Camilo Sesto dies at 72

Spanish singer and songwriter Camilo Sesto died Sunday at a clinic in Madrid at age 72, according to a post on his official Twitter account.

"Dear friends. We are very sorry to inform you that our great and dear artist Camilo Sesto just left us. Rest in peace," they announced on Twitter.

"With regret we communicate: Camilo Sesto has died at the Quirón Clinic, the morning of September 8, after complications from renal failure and two cardiorespiratory arrests," published the artist's website.

Sesto, born in Alicante, rose to fame in 1971 with the success "Algo de mí" ("Something of me"), and later his fame grew by his leading role in the work "Jesus Christ Superstar" in 1976.

Recognized internationally for his ballads, the artist came to sell more than 100 million copies of his more than 40 albums, according to Spanish media.

Spanish government's president, Pedro Sánchez, recognized the artist's work, "with his genuine voice, as an interpreter and composer, he managed to be one of the most beloved and universal artists. Spain and all of Latin America lament the loss of Camilo Sesto", posted on Twitter

"My hug to his family and the world of music. His melodies will always be part of our memory."
