The Latin Grammy reward the best artists of the Latin American music scene. However, in the 20th edition, music was not the only main character. The popularity of these awards has made Latin Grammy a platform to make visible political and economic problems that affect the region.

In LatinAmerican Post we bring you the good, the bad and the ugly of these year's awards.

The good

Juanes was recognized as the Personality of the year and the musical association surprised him with his idol Lars Ulrich, drummer of Metallica. On the screen, it could be seen how the Colombian singer couldn't believe that the drummer was on stage talking about him and the person in charge of giving him the recognition.

The Metallica member stated that “I had the pleasure of meeting Juanes a few years ago while playing in Mexico (…) I always admired his creativity and perseverance. He was a Metallica fan. Tonight we close the circle. I declare myself Juanes' fan. My brother, my friend, my partner, it is a pleasure to recognize him as the personality of the year.” The Colombian could not help showing his emotions.

The bad

Several exponents of reggaeton had spoken out against the academy for the "exclusion" of the urban genre from the main categories of the awards. In this regard, on November 12, Maluma told Entertainment Tonight that “to be honest, I don't feel like I'm part of the Academy. It's as if, I don't know; they want me out. All genres, reggaeton included, we change lives. We are doing wonderful things for the world and I feel that they do not see that,” continued the Colombian, “It is really sad because we all appreciate and respect the Academy. When I saw the nominations, it was like 'What did I do wrong ?!' It was so strange not to be part of it, you feel that you are not really part of the Latin Academy, ”said the interpreter of 'Mala Mía'.

Ugly thing

We call this situation "The ugly" for the serious complaints made by Mon Laferte and Juan Pablo Vega. The Chilean singer denounced on the Grammy carpet that in Chile "they torture, rape and kill." The singer wrote the complaint and showed her breasts to publicize the abuses that are living in the southern country.

The singer also wore a green handkerchief on her neck, a symbol of women struggling because abortion is decriminalized in Chile. In her speech, when she received the award for Best Alternative Music Album, the singer read a poem by La Chinganera: “Chile hurts me inside. You bleed me for every vein. I carry each chain. That imprisons you to the center. Chile outside, Chile inside. Chile to the sound of injustice. The boot of the militia. The bullet of the one who does not listen. It will not stop our fight. Until justice is done.”

Another singer who made complaints at the event was Juan Pablo Vega, a Colombian artist. The producer, nominated in the Producer category of the year, carried a sign that read "In Colombia, they are killing us". The Colombian's message referred to the situation facing the coffee country with the murder of social leaders and minors. In his Twitter account, the producer said that "it is time for music to denounce."

Both artists used the great media coverage that Latin Grammy awards have to denounce the social situations facing their corresponding nations. At this time, a large number of Latin American countries are in the midst of social crises that have put their corresponding governments in check.
