Leer en español: Estos son los nominados a los Óscar

The Academy Award nominees have already been announced, which will be on February 9. Here we make a commented list of the most relevant categories of the awards.

Best film

The nominees are Ford v. Ferrari, The Irish, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, Marriage Story, 1917, Once upon a time in Hollywood and Parasite. While this category surprises with the Korean nomination (foreigners are not usually nominated for this category), otherwise this is a very diverse category. Of nine nominees, at least five are films entirely about white men or with a masculine aesthetic.

Best director

The nominees are Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), Todd Phillips (Joker), Sam Mendes (1917), Quentin Tarantino (Once upon a time in Hollywood) and Bong Joon-ho (Parasite). It is noteworthy in this category that the only director whose film is nominated in the category for Best Film, Greta Gerwig, is not nominated for Best Director. Within this category, there is no nomination for a woman this year, although the numbers of female directors in commercial films have reached a record, neglect of the Academy?

Best actress

The nominees are Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Cynthia Erivo (Harriet), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Charlize Theron (The Scandal) and Renée Zellweger (Judy). Many have commented on the absence of Jennifer Lópz in this category, mostly white as well. The New Yorker stood out this year for his role in Hustlers, a film that shone by its absence in the nominations but was well received by critics and the public.

Best actor

The nominees are Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Leonardo DiCaprio (Once upon a time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes). The nomination to Antonio Banderas is surprising in this category, because, again, they are not usually nominated in the main categories for productions outside of Hollywood. However, it is quite predictable that the favorite will win, Joaquin Phoenix for his role as Joker, since he already took the Golden Globe and the Critics' Choice.

Best Supporting Actress

The nominees are Kathy Bates (Richard Jewell), Laura Dern (Marriage Story), Scarlett Johansson (Jojo Rabbit), Florence Pugh (Little Women) and Margot Robbie (The Scandal). The favorite in this category is undoubtedly Laura Dern for her role as a divorce lawyer in the history of marriage. It is also noteworthy that it is the second nomination of Scarlett Johansson in these awards, which had never been nominated before.
