On February 3, the awards season began in Hollywood with the announcement of the productions nominated for the 78th Golden Globes gala. As expected, after an atypical year, streaming took center stage of this edition , showing the importance of this type of format for the reproduction of cinema and television.

Thus, with 11 nominations in the best categories, Netflix was placed as the platform with the most nominations in cinema : six for 'Mank' and five for The trial of the Chicago 7, both made under a dramatic and historical format.

However, and although it only obtained four nominations, 'Nomadland' , winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, is considered by experts as the favorite to win the award for 'Best Film' .

Taking this information into account, in LatinAmerican Post we show you a short review of these, the most nominated productions for the 78th edition of the Golden Globes:

Mank

According to the specialized portal Espinof, the film directed by David Fincher ('The curious case of Benjamin Button' and 'Fight Club'), "is, without a doubt, one of the best films" that were released in 2020 .

The film, biographical and dramatic, tells the story of Herman J. Mankiewicz, co-writer of 'Citizen Kane' (1941), focuses on the way in which this character was inspired to create this, considered by many to be a masterpiece. The main character is Gary Oldman, who managed to give Mankiewicz the humanistic, political and social touch that the writters and its director wanted so much.

" The recreation of the time (is) impeccable and Oldman offers here what is possibly the best interpretation of his career to date, " explained Espinof in the analysis of this Netflix film nominated for:

  • Best film
  • Best Actor (Gary Oldman)
  • Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried)
  • Best Director (David Fincher)
  • Best Screenplay (Jack Fincher)
  • Best soundtrack

Where to see it? Mank is available on the Netflix streaming platform.

The trial of the Chicago 7

On this occasion, Aaron Sorkin, in his directorial debut, told a story in which he portrays the situation of the United States at the end of the 1960s, with the police repression at full blast and the pro-freedom and anti-war social demonstrations in the focus of public opinion .

With a movie plot based on a trial against seven protesters of the 'hippie' culture in Chicago, considered by many as 'unfair' and of a purely political nature, this feature film shows the judicial irregularities caused by the US government itself.

The five categories in which this film is nominated (produced by Marc Platt Productions and DreamWorks, and distributed by Netflix) are:

  • Best film
  • Best Supporting Actor (Sacha Baron Cohen)
  • Best Director (Aaron Sorkin)
  • Best Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin)
  • Best Original Song (“Hear my voice”)

Where to see it? Also available on Netflix .

Nomadland

The film, winner in Venice and Toronto, transports us to the inclement weather that a woman (Frances McDormand) must experience , along with a group of so-called "nomads" who, faced the closure of some industries in the United States, are forced to create a "walking" solidarity network to survive .

Performing of "outsourcing" jobs throughout North America is one of the problems addressed in this film, directed by Chloé Zhao and based on the book Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century , written by Jessica Bruder.

There are four nominations for 'Nomadland', which will premiere in commercial theaters on February 19, but which, according to Variety, will also be broadcast through Hulu, Disney's alternative streaming platform that plans to expand its catalog with this movie from next March 4:

  • Best film

Meanwhile, on television, The Crown, Schitt's Creek and Ozark (all three from Netflix) , controlled the nominations with six, five and four, respectively.
