Amazon wants to revolutionize the world of streaming. Although Netflix is currently positioned as the first alternative when users decide to consume content , the truth is that the e-commerce company is generating many attractive original productions, but also buying licenses to strengthen its already extensive catalog of movies and series.

They recently made a move that could revolutionize the way we consume content. Jeff Bezos' company bought the historic MGM Studios – those with the image of the lion – for a historic figure of 8.450 million dollars, the second highest in the history of the company , which marks a before and after in video on demand business for streaming platforms.

Considered the first major studio in Hollywood, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer was born in 1924 … and has since established itself as one of the most iconic brands in film and television. This commercial move not only means the triumph of digital platforms, but it could also be a blow to competitors, due to the large amount of high-quality content that may appear on Amazon. Let's see the main ones.

Amazon and MGM

The first thing to understand is the enormous value that MGM has for the film industry. For example, in terms of records, we observe that it has films that have achieved more than 180 Oscars and about 100 Emmys, so they can now be part of the Amazon Prime Video catalog .

We are talking about pure history, because she was one of the protagonists of the golden age of Hollywood, when, between 1910 and 1960, they dominated the international scene in the “era of studies”. There it competed with other renowned companies, such as Paramount, Universal Studios, Disney, Warner Bros or Columbia Pictures.

We are not only talking about productions of incalculable historical value, but also, from this moment, the iconic lion logo can be part of the production of exclusive content for its new owner. In other words, it will continue to operate as a creator of series and films, although in an exclusive contract for Amazon.

It is worth mentioning that the agreement does not include all series and movies . Those prior to 1986, with the exception of United Artists, belong to Warner, as Ted Turner had acquired the rights to the classic MGM Films tapes. This implies that some classics, such as Gone with the Wind, The Wizard of Oz or Singing in the Rain, will surely be out of platform.

In this sense, this movement will seek to attract the attention of moviegoers and people who love classic cinema movies. However, that is not all: the decision will allow it to take over certain commercial brands, which will serve to exploit new creative universes and generate possible prequels, sequels, spin-offs or reboots of historical franchises that always leave millionaire profits. For example, it would not be strange to see new content from Robocop, The Lord of the Rings or James Bond, among others .

Precisely, regarding this last character that marked generations, from Amazon they declared that it will have a "great importance" in the future of the platform. This is not only related to the possibility that we see the new Agent 007 movie exclusively within Amazon Prime Videos , to name one possibility.

In this sense, just to name a few cases, the following hugely successful productions will be part of the future of Amazon Prime Video:

  • Vikings
  • The Handmaid's Tale
  • Child's play
  • The hobbit
  • tomb Raider
  • Silence of the Lambs
  • Raging bull
  • Poltergeist
  • The Addams Family
  • Rocky
  • Believe
  • 12 Angry Men
  • A Star is Born

It is clear that they will not be the only series and movies that will be added to Amazon. As the weeks go by, we will see all the news that will be added to the catalog to make it the most complete on the market. In addition, everything would seem to indicate that many of these iconic franchises could be continued or reissued. We look forward to it!
