Macri: winning over Argentina

Leer en Español: Macri a la conquista de Argentina

Mauricio Macri, president of Argentina, will look to better his voter favorability in five provinces. The president seeks to strengthen his trips to the interior of the country to try to win in Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, Chubut, Chaco, and Tierra del Fuego. But for Macri, obtaining these provinces means having the support of the largest polling stations, so along with the “Cambiemos alliance”, the Head of State has tried to travel to these regions in order to receive support and get the expected results.

According to the latest polls, on October 22nd, the “Cambiemos alliance” will extend its triumphs to Santa Fe and the decisive provinces of Buenos Aires, Cordoba, and Mendoza. If this happens, Macri will be able to say that his campaign controls the five largest electoral districts in the country, which facilitates his chances of winning the elections in 2019.

Taking IGNORE INTO account the results of the PASO last August, Macri, along with the ruling party, obtained the majority of votes; the only province in a tie was Buenos Aires. Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, the leader of the main opposition party, has also used those results to try and consolidate the most votes where she believes they can still win. Likewise, she has called on all the opposition candidates to make a common front, to create a possible alliance as Macri did in 2015, which resulted in “Cambiemos”.

To give the best possible battle in Buenos Aires, the president has approached the Peronists, a political movement within Argentina from the 1940’s that is based around the public figure of Juan Domingo Perón, and has used the symbols of that time to reinforce supporters and sympathizers. Macri in his public speeches has tried to emphasize the idea of nationalization, which means nothing more than the opportunity to bring the candidates together to eliminate the differences and win. This is the same populist strategy that helped Cristina Fernandez in her most successful time.

Macri, taking IGNORE INTO account the results in Buenos Aires, has supported the current governor in order to create a favorable image in the region for “Cambiemos”, hopes to eliminate the technical tie, and obtain a victory in the region with at least 3 percentage points above the rest. The Argentinian president is aware of the support that can provide young people, as well as the bulk of the votes, so he wants to use Governor Maria Vidal to create a bridge between “Cambiemos” and the youth itself. For Mauricio Macri winning Buenos Aires implies having political control of the country.
