The former Peruvian president died on Wednesday morning after it became known that he would be arrested for alleged corruption offenses in the Odebrecht case
Alán García, president of Peru on two occasions (1985-1990 and 2006-2011), died on the morning of Wednesday, April 17, after shooting himself in the head after the preliminary arrest warrant for 10 days was known in relation to the Odebrecht corruption case. The arrest was ordered by the prosecutor José Domingo Pérez and the diligence was made by the Investigation Division of High Complexity crimes. Garcia died in the operating room of the Casimiro Ulloa hospital after suffering three cardio-respiratory attacks while the medical team tried to save his life due to the bullet self-inflicted wound. The former president's decision has caused different reactions. On the one hand, Ricardo Pinedo, Garcia's secretary, described García's death as "honor" and heroic act made by a "free man". Pinedo declared that "Alan García has given his blood contribution so that Peru is a democratic country and not a country dominated by the appetite of enemies." On the other hand, there are those who affirm that the suicide of Alan García confirms the suspicions of the prosecution that the former president received illegal payments from the Brazilian Odebrecht.
