For Brazil’s president, one of the biggest effects of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union may be to boost the re-election of Mauricio Macri
Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro said that the free trade agreement signed between Mercosur and the European Union might prevent Argentina from having a new leftist government. According to him, this issue is "more important" than seeking a solution to the crisis in Venezuela.

Bolsonaro has defended the Argentine president Mauricio Macri in the race for the re-election in his clash with the senator and ex-president Cristina Kirchner. Even though Kirchner has announced that she will run as vice president in the ticket with Alberto Fernandez, who was the chief of staff of her husband, Néstor Kirchner, Cristina is seen as the real adversary.
"The Mercosur agreement, involving Argentina, in my opinion, more than a good agreement for us is an agreement that may help Argentina not return to the hands of those who were part of the São Paulo Forum", Bolsonaro said during a session with senators and deputies of the Parliamentary Front of the Agriculture and Livestock (FPA).

The crisis in Argentina – with rising poverty, rising dollar, and persistently high inflation – has threatened Macri's project to reinstate power. At the same time, it has favored a possible return of the kirchnerista wing of the Peronism, represented by Cristina's ticket.
During a visit to the neighboring country in early June, Bolsonaro urged Argentines to vote responsibly to avoid "new Venezuelans" on the continent. Now he said that the situation of Argentina is overshadowing the case of Venezuela under the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
