María Camila Osorio Makes History in Colombian Tennis

The young Colombian tennis player is making history and started the season on the right foot.

María Camila Osorio Serrano, from Cúcuta city, is only 21 years old and has become one of the great promises of world tennis. Last week after reaching the semifinals of the Lyon Open, the Colombian tennis player climbed 12 places in the official ranking of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), reaching number 61, thus adding 913 points. This makes it the number one racket in Colombia today.

The athlete was defeated in the semifinals of the open that was played on French soil by local tennis player Caroline Garcia, with a final score of 6-2 and 6-2. The match was played on the central court of the Palais des Sports, in Gerland. García established himself very well in the match and was effective with his first serve, thus preventing Osorio from getting more chances of winning the place in the final.

From the age of 6, the young woman born in Cúcuta, Norte de Santander, began in tennis. It was a decision influenced by her family, where athletes abounded. Her grandfather was a professional soccer player, her mother was a renowned basketball player, her father was also a professional player on the Deportes Quindío team, and her brother made his professional debut in 2018 with Fortaleza. In this way they gave her a push to start competing in the National Games, where she won a silver medal for the first time in 2015, when she was only 13 years old. In the youth category, she won eight titles on the world circuit.

Her Personal Achievements Highlight the White Sport

It is important to remember that María Camila was number one in the world in the junior category, when she became champion of the United States Open, of this same level, on September 8, 2019. Since then, Osorio Serrano has advanced significantly in the ranks. WTA ranking and reached box 33, in April 2022. That same year she finished the season in 82nd place, having as a balance in favor a final in Monterrey, Mexico, and a semifinal in Bogotá, Colombia.

Camila had a good performance this year at the Australian Open and reached the second round. There, she had to face the Polish Iga Swiatek, number 1 in the world, and was defeated in two sets, 6-2 6-3. For this reason, her advance to the semifinals in Lyon is a firm step to start the season, reaching important achievements in her career and advancing in the world ranking.
