In the era of online multiplayer games, a single-player game has been able to dethrone the aforementioned games by breaking sales records and being acclaimed by the critics with perfect scores.

Thirteen years have passed since the launch of the first God of War, a game that undoubtedly marked the second generation of the acclaimed Sony console, PlayStation. It tells the birth of the legend of Kratos, the god of war, who decides to stand up to his fateful fate and end one by one with the gods of the Greek Olympus. It was a different context to the current one in terms of video games: the market of this industry was taking its first steps at the same time, while the multiplayer and interconnection platforms were being developed. According to statistics revealed by Sony, the first God of War sold 4.6 million copies by 2012, seven years after its release. Today, the new edition of God of War reached more than half of these sales in 3 days.

What makes the God of War so attractive to the players?

Cory Barlog, director of the game, tells Polygon in an interview that it was never his intention to abandon the story of Kratos despite leaving the team after the release of God of War 2, in 2007. However, the projects he worked on later and his relationship with his son made him mature enough so that, in 2013, the year in which the production of GOW 4 began, he radically changed the action-adventure formula that the previous games have been developing and will focus more on everything the development of the characters and the story.

The new game leaves behind the characteristics of the first three installments and has drastic changes in its gameplay. One of the most notable changes is, undoubtedly, the camera angle, which has gone from being a dynamic general plane focused on the action, with cuts and cinematographic scenes, to a sequence shot without cuts and without load screens (similar to the used in films like Birdman), which creates the illusion of being present in the story while following the character through it. Another of the intrinsic novelties of this God of War is the maturity that Kratos has reached and the new relationship he develops with his son Athreus, directly affecting the story and the gameplay.

In spite of the changes and novelties, God of War 4 is still a game of pure action, sexuality, violence, explicit language, and, especially, sequences of epic battles against Greek gods, particularities that have been maintained since the first game.

The success of the PlayStation 4 exclusive game seems to have no limit. According to statistics published by Sony, in its first weekend the God of War sold 3.1 million copies worldwide, an impressive record when compared to Uncharted 4, another exclusive Sony, which sold 2.7 million copies in its first week on sale.

God of War 4 is for sale in digital and physical format, exclusively for Play Station 4. In Latin America three editions of the four available will be sold. The standard edition, with a price of 59.99USD, will bring the game in digital or physical format. The Deluxe Edition, with a price of 69.99USD, will come with the digital edition, an armor for Kratos, a digital comic book, a digital book, a shield and a dynamic theme for PS4. The Collector's edition, for 129.99USD, will be accompanied by a figure of approximately 23 cm from Kratos and Athreus, and will also include an exclusive lithograph and all the objects of the Digital Deluxe version. Cory Barlog has assured that he will continue at the head of the game and affirms that more adventures of Kratos and Athreus will come in the future.
