The Drone Racing League: Technology is taking over the sports world

One of the competitions that is becoming increasingly popular between speed lovers is The Drone Racing League (DRL), which was founded by Nicholas Horbaczewski in 2015. As explained in the official Twitter account of the DRL, the drones-racing is the sport of the future, and without risking the safety of the racer.

According to the website Dronidad, the competition is as follows: the tests are called "levels" and each of these levels are carried out in 3D circuits that include different checkpoints illuminated by neon lights. Racers with their drones must go through each of the points in the shortest time. The competitor who accumulates the highest number of points, for the number of checkpoints traversed in the shortest time, will be the winner.

Factors to consider

The battery life is a very important factor, since it determines the duration of each tour. That is why, as Dronidad explained, competitors sometimes must change drone once each round of the circuit has been completed. The racing teams are the ones who organize and supply the racers with drones. There are also trainings, classifications and races.

With 3D circuits there is no limit. Each of the racers must implement their best skills to overcome each level. In addition, the location of the levels is very important. The first edition of the tournament was held in an old power station outside of New York, while the second was held at the Miami Dolphins stadium, explained Dronidad.

According to Quartz, the drones have cameras that send signals to the racers and if they are going to broadcast live. However, there is a clash between these two transmissions, since the transmission in HD delays the feeds and generates dizziness in the racers. Therefore, until now these competitions are not broadcast live to avoid these small failures.

The way to identify each drone is through its colored LED lights. To generate more intensity and drama in the locations, they are adorned with neon lights and fog generated by dry ice, which create a more psychedelic atmosphere, added Quartz. This website compared the DRL with "a Star Wars' pod race" and indicated that the league hopes to be the Formula 1, NASCAR and MotoGP of the drone-racing.

As it is a competition of short data, the objective of its competitors is to turn it IGNORE INTO a massive sport, so that with each edition details are optimized. One of the advances with which it has been possible to reach the masses is through television broadcasting. This was achieved from 2017 by signing an agreement with ESPN and ESPN2, Sky Sports Mix and 7Sports, according to The New York Times.

The next season of the DRL will begin on September 6, 2018, which, according to the Dronelife portal, will have the following locations:

  • Biosphere 2 of the University of Arizona, the largest ecological observatory on the planet, located in Oracle, Arizona (United States)
  • The Adventuredome at Circus Circus Las Vegas, a covered five-acre amusement park in Las Vegas, Nevada (United States)
  • Allianz Riviera, a gigantic soccer stadium in Nice, France
  • BMW Welt, the multi-sensory brand and product experience center of the BMW Group, located in the heart of Munich, Germany
  • Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

Finally, and according to The Drone Racing League, the racers who will compete in the 2018 season come from different countries, including Canada, the United States, England, Germany, France, and the Netherlands.
