In a dazzling display of music and festivity, Daniela Mercury, one of Brazil’s most renowned singers and the undisputed queen of ‘axé’ rhythm, captivated a crowd of 50,000 during her inaugural Carnival parade in Rio de Janeiro. Known for hits like ‘O Canto da Cidade,’ ‘Rapunzel,’ and ‘Música de Rua,’ and with nearly 20 million records sold worldwide, Mercury led the ‘Chá da Alice group through the heart of Rio, bringing a new flavor to a city celebrated for its samba.
At 58 years old, Mercury, a Unicef goodwill ambassador since 1995, has traditionally led her group in her hometown of Salvador during Carnival. This year, however, marked her debut in Rio de Janeiro, a city synonymous with one of the world’s most famous and vibrant Carnival celebrations. Her appearance in Rio was significant, signaling a blend of cultural traditions and musical styles.
The Rio Carnival, long dominated by samba rhythms, witnessed a refreshing change as Mercury’s ‘axé’ beats resonated through the streets. Mercury’s gratitude and excitement were palpable as she performed her version of ‘Cidade Maravilhosa,’ a beloved Carnival song considered Rio’s second anthem. “I feel so thrilled to be here. Rio is such an important place for music, history, and culture… I’m overwhelmed with emotion,” she expressed from atop her ‘trio elétrico.’
‘Chá da Alice’ stood out as the most significant ‘bloco de rua,’ or street parade group, marking the beginning of Carnival festivities in Rio de Janeiro. These street parades, with each featuring its band and singers, are a hallmark of Brazil’s Carnival, known for their accessibility and street-level engagement.
This Sunday was not only about Mercury’s parade. Other groups, including ‘Amigos da Onça,’ ‘Só Caminha,’ ‘Hipnotizados,’ and ‘Bloco das Divas,’ also took to the streets in different neighborhoods, each adding their unique rhythms to the city’s vibrant tapestry.
Countdown to the Official Kickoff
The Rio Carnival officially kicks off on Friday, February 9th, with the symbolic handing over of the city keys to King Momo and continues until the following Tuesday, culminating in the dazzling samba school parades at the iconic Sambódromo. While the official parades conclude on February 13th, when the winning samba school is announced, the street festivities extend into the following weekend, ensuring that the city’s streets are alive with music and dance for days.
