Healthcare and education: Guatemala’s path of improvement

The social initiative takes place in the village of Tzununá, Santa Cruz in the western region of Sololá. In the village, indigenous population predominates and has been long burdened by poverty. In addition to struggling malnutrition, a problem that affects more than 50 % of the children population of Guatemala, the project works in improving the areas of education, entrepreneurship, environmental, and risk management and infrastructure.

According to the results of the initiative, the chronic malnutrition rates dropped by 5.2%, from a prevalence of 76.5 % in 2013 to 71.3 %. Additionally, the creation of 25 infrastructure projects were reported.

The project will benefit nearly 10,000 people who inhabit Tzununa. Thanks to the changed being made, various Guatemalans will have adequate health centers, areas dedicated to education, and roads. With the project underway, work on social infrastructure and urban planning became of the upmost importance.

Also, infrastructure contributions were extended to the construction of training centers. The most relevant was Training and Nutrition, where workshops on nutrition, food, cooking, baking, health, hygiene, dressmaking, and preparation were given. With a contribution of 97 thousand dollars of the government of Japan, the Pajomel Mixed Rural Official School was remodeled. It was also equipped with donations of various companies, both national and international.
