The fight against content piracy, which includes respect for intellectual property, is a constant concern in the different countries of the region. In this way, it seeks to end a market that violates the rights of both creators and distributors of audiovisual content.
The piracy industry in Latin America
Maryleana Mendez, general secretary of Asiet (Inter-American Association of Telecommunications Companies) and director of CETLA (Center for Telecommunications Studies of Latin America) mentioned in a report on piracy in the region, that the formats of the piracy industry have changed. He explained that not only are products offered, such as software and merchandise, but also pirated subscriptions of TV services, video streaming, or the download of content from illegal platforms on the Internet.
The piracy industry causes a loss of revenue for designers, developers, operators, creators and distributors. Furthermore, it also poses a risk to users, who are exposed to different types of security risks.
Fight against piracy
In the region, according to the report by the consulting firm Biz Latin Hub, there are four countries that are leading the fight against piracy:
Mexico
This country is constantly updated in the area of intellectual property, due to its numerous commercial alliances. As of 2018, laws were created in the country to protect new forms of content distribution, including aromas and holograms.
Piracy is punished with actions at the administrative, civil and criminal levels. Together with Colombia and Cuba, it is part of the Madrid Protocol, which validates the effort made by the country in the fight against piracy. However, Mexico still does not have a good protection in terms of online piracy.
Colombia
Due to the high investment of foreign companies, Colombia has adopted different measures to improve the protection of intellectual property and prevent piracy. Different resolutions have been approved that seek to make the intellectual property registration process easier, in order to increase the legal protection of developers. Copyright in the country is protected between 50 to 70 years.
The protection laws include both civil and criminal actions in the event of piracy. This country is also a member of the Madrid Protocol, which has improved the protection of both trademarks and content. Intellectual property applications have also been made much simpler, although there is still no solid legislation in the area of biology and the protection of content on the Internet.

Chile is another of the countries that have adopted commitments in the protection of intellectual property rights. One of the factors that have driven intellectual protection laws is the growing openness to trade and the signing of trade agreements.
It has created an institution for this purpose, the National Institute of Industrial Property (INAPI), which acts in conjunction with other government agencies. All these actions are intended to show the importance of intellectual property rights in the country, both for commerce and for creators.
In Chile, patent applications have increased in different areas, in different types of industries, such as mining. Similarly, universities have also started filing patent applications in different fields, helping to diversify the economy.
This has been developed at the same time as educational campaigns, which aim to educate the consumer about the importance of respecting intellectual property and the costs and risks of piracy and counterfeit products. However, despite best efforts, high levels of counterfeiting and piracy can still be found in different areas, including content.
Peru
This country is one of those that has improved its position regarding the protection of intellectual property. The application for patents and protection of the intellectual property is one of the fastest, compared to other countries in the region.
You can apply for legal protection against piracy and request compensation for damages in civil courts. It has also signed international agreements to protect intellectual property. Peru is also part of the Madrid Protocol.
In addition to these countries, Maryleana Méndez mentioned that there are countries in the region that have also taken concrete actions in the fight against piracy. Among these countries is Brazil with Operation 404 (2019) and Ecuador with the Administrative Blocking Orders.
The fight against piracy in the development and creation of content, as well as in different types of products and brands, is fundamental in economic development. This builds confidence and losses in the economic area are avoided. As for consumers, they also benefit, since the risks of computer damage are reduced.
