NFL’s International Player Pathway 2024 Welcomes Dominican Bayron Matos
Dominican athlete Bayron Matos joins 15 other international talents selected for the NFL’s 2024 International Player Pathway program, aiming to secure a spot among the 32 teams in the league.

The National Football League (NFL) announced a fresh influx of global talent into its 2024 International Player Pathway program, with Dominican Bayron Matos among the 16 elite athletes from eight countries. Matos, born in Santo Domingo, moved to the United States after turning 18. He pursued basketball at Hamilton Heights Christian Academy and later at the University of South Florida. However, his athletic journey took a turn when he switched to American football, showcasing his adaptability and commitment to excelling in sports.
Matos’ Journey from Santo Domingo to the NFL
The International Player Pathway program, initiated in 2017, aims to provide athletes worldwide with an opportunity to enhance their skills and compete for a place in an NFL team. Since its inception, the program has seen 37 players sign with NFL teams. One notable success story is Chilean Sammis Reyes, who made history as the first player from his country to play in the NFL, joining the Washington Commanders in 2021.
The selected 16 players, including Matos, will start training in the United States at the IMG Academy in January. This training provides a platform to demonstrate their abilities to team scouts, furthering their aspirations of joining the NFL.
Upon completing the training camp, these athletes will be eligible to secure a spot on the practice squad of any of the 32 NFL teams. This opportunity is a significant step toward achieving their dreams of playing professional American football.
In addition to Bayron Matos, the program’s participants include Australians Jotham Russell and Patrick Murtagh; Irish athletes Marck Jackson, Charlie Smyth, Darragh Leader, and Rory Beggan; English players George Smith, Travis Clayton, and Harry Mallinder; Austrian Florian Bierbaumer; Welsh Louis Rees-Zammit; and Nigerians Sam Orji, Isaac Ajanah, Udo Uzuegbu, and Praise Olatok.
