The end of the year is a great time to travel with family or friends to different parts of the world, and a lot of people prefer tropical destinations in which the risk of getting a sunburn are high.

As you may know, sunburn is caused by ultraviolet rays that damage your skin. According to NHS, it may cause your skin to become itchy, red, sore, among others for about one week.

There are many ways to prevent it: wearing hats while you are going to be exposed to the sun, using a beach umbrella to protect yourself and applying tons of sun protector constantly are just a few, and although sunburns are usually short-lived, they could cause serious health problems, such as skin cancer, in the future.

However, if you get a little too excited at the beach and get a sunburn, there are a few things you can do to ease the pain and keep enjoying your holidays:

1. Get a pain reliever

As read on Everyday Health, oral medications as aspirin or ibuprofen can help reduce some of the redness caused by sunburn if they are used at an early stage and some other symptoms such as swelling, pain, fever, and headache.

2. Take cool showers

As read on the American Academy of Dermatology, cooling down works to relieve the pain and feel relieved. Get under a cold shower or prepare yourself a bath or apply a cold compress in the affected areas. As soon as you do so, pat yourself dry gently but leave some water in your skin.

3. Moisturize

Apply a moisturizing cream or some aloe vera gel to hydrate your skin and ease the symptoms of the sunburn. Also, according to the Travel Republic, apple cider vinegar supports the regeneration of the skin, so dilute a small amount of it with water, put it in a spray bottle and use it whenever you feel discomfort.

4. Drink water and other fluids

To avoid being dehydrated, drink tons of liquids that help you recover. Water and other caffeine and alcohol-free fluids work just fine.

5. Be extra careful

If you get a sunburn, try to be extra careful the following days. Wear clothing that covers the damaged skin outdoors and don´t forget about sunscreen. Seek the shade of an umbrella or just stay in the shade while you feel better.

However, as Everyday Health suggests, if you have any of the following symptoms, ask an expert for help:

•    Extreme skin pain
•    Facial swelling
•    Fever
•    Chills
•    Headache
•    Stomach upset
•    Confusion
•    Dizziness or fainting
•    Dehydration
