As is tradition, the Golden Globes inaugurate the season of film and television awards in Hollywood. Although this year the ceremony had to be postponed due to the covid pandemic, finally, the names of the nominees of this new edition were known. The award ceremony will be on February 28 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles .

The announcement of the nominations was broadcast live around the world through the official awards page. From the comfort of their homes, the six-time Golden Globe winner Sarah Jessica Parker and the winner Taraji P. Henson were in charge of announcing all the nominations for this edition.

An Argentine star in English productions

Among the list of celebrities who agreed to this year's nominations is Anya Taylor-Joy . The young woman of Argentine-British origin is the only actress of Latin descent who will compete in the 78th edition of the Golden Globes . Taylor-Joy is a candidate in two categories: best actress in a comedy or musical for Emma and best actress in a miniseries, anthology or television movie for her participation in The Queen's Gambit. Although there are still a few weeks to know the results of the voting, for many, she is already the winner of at least one of the awards despite sharing a category with established actresses such as Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Behind the mask

Although this year, The Mandalorian obtained the nomination for best series, its protagonist, Pedro Pascal, was out of competition before the final list of nominees was known . And it is because of the decision of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) to prohibit the candidacy of any actor or actress who does not show his face on the screen. This new provision explains that voice performances are not eligible for either category. The rule not only affects the character of the Chilean actor, who appears with a mask throughout the series, except on rare and brief occasions, but also the entire universe of masked heroes and villains that each day gains more minutes on screen. We will have to be attentive and see how the productions are made to overcome this new requirement that would leave many interpreters without the possibility of accessing the award.

This is how immigrants do it

Who did obtain a nomination in the category of best actor in a comedy or musical film is the descendant of Puerto Ricans, Lin-Manuel Miranda . The composer, singer, actor and playwright earned the nomination for his character Alexander Hamilton in the musical that tells the story of one of the so-called founding fathers of the United States.

A Latin American legend

Meanwhile, only one Latin American film is among those selected to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category. Jayro Bustamante's La Llorona is the first Guatemalan film to be nominated for the Golden Globe . The other films competing for the award are Another Round (Denmark), The life ahead (Italy), Minari (USA) and Two of us (France / USA).

Undoubtedly, we expected more Latino presence among the nominees, as in previous years where figures such as Alfonso Cuarón, Antonio Banderas and Viggo Mortensen were competing; but we will have to wait until 2022 to see if this small percentage grows.
