On Monday of this week, the Colombian soccer world was shocked to receive the news that Freddy Rincón had been in a traffic accident. The former midfielder who stood out with the Colombian National Team, Real Madrid, Napoli and Corinthians was taken to the Imbanaco Clinic, in Cali, after his vehicle crashed into a bus. Wednesday afertoon we knew te news about his death.
At LatinAmerican Post, we decided to face this period by remembering the best moments of the midfielder's career.
Club World Champion with Corinthians
The only international title that Rincón won in his career was with Corinthians. It was the year 2000 and two Brazilian teams, Corinthians and Vasco da Gama, were fighting for the Club World Cup at the Maracana, to make matters worse Brazil was the venue for the event that year. After 120 minutes without a goal, Rincón's team won on penalties 4-3 against Vasco, with a goal from the Colombian. As a curious fact, it is worth noting that Freddy was the only non-Brazilian player who played in those finals.
Debut with Real Madrid
Although he was not long with Madrid (he barely lasted a year), Rincón's arrival at this team marked a historic milestone for Colombia. It was the first time that a Colombian debuted in this team, which some consider to be the best in the world. He only played 21 games and if we are honest he did not stand out, but this is a difficult stage in his career to forget.
Goal against Germany
A historic goal. This is the only way to describe the goal Rincón scored on June 19, 1990 at the World Cup in Italy. The Colombian National Team was then facing the German National Team and the cafeteros were down 1-0 in the 47th minute of the second half. After a masterful forward pass from Pibe Valderrama, Rincón finished off with a right leg that went between the legs of the German goalkeeper, giving the Colombia team a draw. To this day, it is remembered as one of the most exciting goals in the history of the National Team and part of the popular culture of the country.
Two great goals in the 5-0 against Argentina
Finally, it is worth remembering the two goals that Rincón scored in the qualifying match for the 1994 World Cup between Argentina and Colombia in September 1993. In this match, there was a brace from Faustino Asprilla, but also from Freddy Rincón. The midfielder not only scored the opening goal in the 41st minute, but also in the 72nd minute. This was a pleasant surprise for the Colombians, who did not expect to beat the Argentines, who were two-time champions at the time.
From LatinAmerican Post, we wish Freddy Rincón a quick and speedy recovery, acknowledging his fundamental role in the history of our sport.
