Earth Day is celebrated every April 22 as a call to action to protect our planet and raise awareness about environmental issues. Since its creation in 1970, it has been an important date around the world to inspire changes in individual and governmental behavior that reduce the negative impact on the environment. The main objective is to sensitize the world population about the challenges facing our planet in terms of pollution, climate change and other environmental problems; in addition to remembering the responsibility that we all share to protect and preserve the planet.
To join in the Earth Day celebration, there are many ways to get involved. In this article, we'll explore five ways to do that, like supporting environmental organizations and getting involved in local events.
1. Learn about earth science with NASA
NASA has put together a number of online resources to celebrate Earth Day in 2023. These resources include Earth observation images and data, as well as educational articles and videos. The agency also encourages people to join citizen science projects, such as bird watching or water quality monitoring. Participating in these projects can help collect scientific data and protect the environment.
In addition, NASA invites you to participate in local events, such as talks and exhibits, to learn more about earth science and conservation. It also calls for being part of cleanup and reforestation initiatives to make a tangible difference in protecting the environment. 2. Go ahead and protect polar bears
The International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List has identified the climate crisis as the greatest threat to the survival of polar bears. The burning of fossil fuels and deforestation are causing warming almost four times faster in the Arctic than in the rest of the world; resulting in the loss of sea ice, a vital space for hunting, breeding, and habitat for polar bears.
To address this threat, Polar Bears International is urging polar bear lovers to advocate for climate action this Earth Day. PBI is asking people to share the latest Synthesis Report of the Sixth Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change; considering it as a roadmap for a stable climate.
In addition to sharing the report, PBI has presented a number of options for getting involved with Earth Day, including watching a TED talk by Alysa McCall on co-existing with polar bears; tune in to live events on PBI's social networks; learn to use your vote; Lobby elected officials on behalf of polar bears, and send a free Earth Day eCard to friends and family.
3. Participate in “Earth Week” with Earthday
The organization EARTHDAY.ORG has created Earth Week for this year, which will take place from April 14 to 22. With a series of events both online and in person in different time zones. The Earth Day Live series, which began in 2020 due to the pandemic, will include talks on environmental issues such as recycling fashion and lobbying elected officials, as well as tree-planting activities and eco-games. The series will culminate on Earth Day with an "Earth Day Party" focused on climate action. 4. Be part of the astronomical camp in Mexico
