FARC begins disarmament process after peace signing

Insurgent FARC-EP have begun today the disarmament process after more than three months that the Colombian government signed peace, a procedure that should be concluded on May 29th.

During a statement, the UN mission responsible for supervising the execution of such measure approved by the consensus of the two sides to start without delay the putting down of weapons, due to the logistic difficulties that postpone the implementation of the agreement.

About 7,000 guerrilla fighters of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People’s Army (FARC-EP) are gathered in 19 zones and seven transitional points where they will abandon their weapons.

The tripartite supervision mechanism, composed of UN observers as well as government and guerrilla spokespeople, will begin as of today the identification and registration of all weapons in the camps of the rebel group.

Containers used to store those weapons, among them those used by FARC-EP members that are part of the monitoring and verification mechanism, will be simultaneously established.

The destruction of munitions, mines and explosives is another step of this phase, experts said.

President Juan Manuel Santos and Timoleon Jimenez, top leader of that organization, signed on November 24th the definitive agreement to end clashes and hostilities.

According to High Commissioner for Peace, Sergio Jaramillo, about 1,200 guerrilla fighters from that organization condemned by political crimes such as rebellion, could be pardoned under the amnesty in coming days.
