This Friday, July 8, while attending a political rally in the city of Nara, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated. The 67-year-old politician was shot several times and despite the medical attention received at the scene and at a nearby hospital, but arrived without vital signs before reaching the Health entity and despite 4 and a half hours of unsuccessful attempts, he was declared dead.

The Japanese authorities have captured a suspect, who has been questioned. The man is identified as Tetsuya Yamagami (41 years old), who, according to the Kyodo agency, was a member of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces (Navy). The attack was committed with a homemade weapon, according to the authorities. However, the motive for the attack is still a question mark.

Despite having left the executive for health reasons, Abe continued to have a high influence in the Government of Fumio Kishida, who is also a member of the PLD. For now, the Japanese executive has called all of its senior officials to return to Tokyo to assess the measures to be taken.

Abe, who ruled the second Asian power between 2012 and 2020, was supporting his political movement, the Liberal Democrat Party (LDP) ahead of the upcoming House elections.

These types of attacks are rare in a country with strong restrictions on the use of weapons and low levels of violence and crime.
