Hate: The high price of being a migrant in the United States
The zero-tolerance policy of Donald Trump surpassed all the limits of the treatment that the president has given to the migrants, demonstrating with this the hatred that he feels towards them
Neither his intention to build a wall that divides the United States from Mexico, nor the mass deportations of Latin citizens, nor the threats against those who arrive at that country to seek refuge and "better opportunities" have been enough for Trump to distill his contempt. The zero-tolerance policy shows that for him there are no barriers that prevent him from eliminating all Latin traces in his territory. Not even if it implies that, as the world has seen, children are the ones who suffer the consequences of his hatred.

The dramatic pictures of children crying disconsolate, locked in cages like prisoners, with their eyes lost in the horizon due to despair, have turned around the world and have aroused the indignation of millions of people who repudiate the actions of Trump and his government. That indignation has generated some pressure on the U.S. president who, seeking to calm the tensions and the criticisms, issued an executive order on June 20 to stop the separations.
However, the impact of this measure is null, because the damage caused at the separated families, especially at the children, is already done. In addition, in the end, the situation will not change, because the onslaught against migrants will continue.
The repudiation against Trump
As it rarely happens to the determinations of the U.S. government, the world has expressed collective repudiation of the outrageous and inhuman actions of Donald Trump. From Unicef to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, and even several American leaders such as the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, have expressed their rejection of the zero-tolerance policy. In addition, they have demanded the cessation of the actions taken by Trump.

"Family detention and separation are traumatic experiences that can expose children most vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, and generate toxic stress that, as many studies have demonstrated, can affect their long-term development," said Henrietta Fore, executive director of Unicef.
"Refugees and migrants should be treated with respect and dignity. Children must not be traumatized by being separated them from their parents," added António Guterres.
"Trump's executive order is no solution at all, it still leaves open the long-term detention of immigrant children, which would clearly violate federal law," said Governor Cuomo.
To this is added the lawsuit against Donald Trump by 10 of the 50 states that make up the American Union. According to Washington's Attorney General, Bob Ferguson, this seeks to questions the constitutionality of separating children from their parents as a "routine matter" when immigrants are caught crossing the United States illegally, as it constitutes a violation of due process.

What will happen then with Trump and his zero-tolerance policy for Latinos?
Beyond the rejection manifested nationally and internationally, it is difficult that this transcends a concrete and forceful action against Donald Trump and the U.S. government. Historically and in other circumstances, the United States, together with other global powers, has imposed sanctions and attacks against other countries such as Venezuela, Cuba, Iran, Syria, among others. However, when it comes to violations and abuses committed by the U.S., the international community has fallen short of doing the same against that country. This even with the known evidence and the gravity of the facts, as it happens now with the separation of children and parents.
However, it should be noted that instances as high as the United Nations and several American leaders have had the vehemence to reject the zero-tolerance policy. Although this will surely not result in explicit and forceful sanctions against Trump and his government, it can generate a new precedent for citizen collective action, as happened with the use of weapons by civilians and the same election of Trump as president of the United States. A collective action that not only stops Trump's abuses once and for all but also allows him to exercise effective citizen control over this and other misogynistic and damaging actions of his government.
