Something essential for human beings in this century is to manage to face the climate crisis that the planet is experiencing. In the same way, the challenges that will arise in the coming years will be even more complex, for this reason, all the nations of the world must establish new policies that allow mitigating the environmental impact. Now, this is a collective vision because society from the States is responsible for imposing the guidelines for the treatment of said problems. However, individually, each person is also responsible for the damage that is done to the environment through daily consumption. So, it is necessarily essential that there be this reflection on how to make a more sustainable world.

An example of the above is what the British band Coldplay has been doing, whose members have shown their concerns about climate change and the way in which tours pollute. For this reason, his tour has as a fundamental axis to be as sustainable as possible, in addition to promoting his actions in other artists.

How are they doing it?

In the past, Coldplay had publicly warned that they would not tour if they were not environmentally friendly. However, this warning was serious. For this reason, they designed a new ecofriendly format for massive events.

The British quartet took on the task of researching with experts, all on the environmental issue, to create this sustainable initiative. Among its actions, it makes use of recyclable material, one hundred percent clean energy and has the goal of planting a tree for each ticket sold at its concerts.

Furthermore, the band partnered with BMW to produce recycled and rechargeable batteries. Also, during the concert they have installations with kinetic floors that are charged with energy with the jumps of the attendees. They also have systems to harness solar energy.

As for travel, artists are prioritizing using electric cars. Also, their first option is to fly commercial and limit the band's charter flights. However, they also have a less harmful bet for their air flights: "Our partner Neste will supply us with sustainable aviation fuel produced 100% from waste and residue, such as used cooking oil from restaurants. When used without mixing With fossil jet fuel, SAF helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions from air travel by up to 80%."

Coldplay Tour Sustainability Principles

According to the band's sustainability site sustainability.coldplay.com, the commitment to touring low in carbon is based on three essential principles:

  1. Reduce consumption as much as possible. A broad recycling proposal, whose objective is to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 50%.

  2. Reinvent. Here the band proposes to support new ecological technologies and implement innovative methods of sustainable tourism.

  3. Restore. It proposes that the tour be the most beneficial for nature, supported by technological projects and carbon footprint reduction.

These three principles of the Coldplay band are the keys that seek to promote a new environmentally friendly model during tours, which also intend to be a step for other artists to follow in their musical projects. "Despite our best efforts, the tour will still have a significant carbon footprint. We are committed to extracting more CO2 than the tour produces by supporting projects based on reforestation, reconstruction, conservation, soil regeneration, carbon capture and renewable energy," the band says on its website.

The importance of these initiatives

Artists and all of humanity must get the idea that the world and people's lifestyles are changing. You can no longer continue with the excessive consumption to which you were accustomed. Therefore, it is important to begin to understand these dynamics and to raise awareness of the problems they have generated for centuries.

In 2019, a study carried out by several universities in the United States and entitled "Carbon Survey: Greenhouse Gas in the United Kingdom in the Music Industry", explains how the music industry has polluted in large quantities.

Changing the irresponsible model in this entertainment medium is plausible because it denotes a clear commitment by artists to recompose to a certain extent the damage that has been caused to nature.
