Electronic Arts recently announced that Star Wars: Squadrons will be the new franchise title for a galaxy far away. According to the Xataka website, it will be a title that will be released on October 2 for PS4, Xbox One and PC, where it can be purchased from the Origin store, Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Unlike other titles in the saga, the idea is that here the gameplay focuses on the flight sequences. In other words, the focus is not on lightsaber fights or even the soldiers' shots, but rather on putting on the suit of a true pilot and flying throughout the galaxy, facing enemies and planets everywhere.
Before this announcement, which according to the specialized media of Hipertextual will also have its own version of virtual reality, we decided to find out other titles in the saga that focus on fights with spaceships and not so much on ground combat. Let's see, then, the best Star Wars air combat games.
Star Wars: Rebel Assault (1993)
In this case, we are talking about one of the most important titles in the entire history of the world of Star Wars video games. In the first place, it was the first one released in CD-ROM format, with a really important production, since you could see 3D graphics with sequences and sounds from the film.
At the same time, it had an interesting story, as we played Rookie One, who had to train within the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War, training as a pilot in many battles with truly recognizable scenarios and planets within the franchise.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer (1999)
Although many people did not like Episode I of the saga, the reality is that, in the field of video games, this title appeared to be very well received at the time, with versions for Nintendo 64, DreamCast, PC and Game Boy Color.
So much so that HobbyConsolas highlights that it was a "tremendously fast" game for its time. Basically, it was about the pod races that appeared in that movie, where you could compete on different planets, tournaments and stages. In addition, there were several game modes, with the possibility of playing two by two on a split screen.
Star Wars: X-Wing (1993)
Was your childhood dream piloting an X-Wing of the Rebellion? Well, all those who have been able to enjoy this game will have fulfilled it, since it was an iconic spacecraft, which had its own role in this title, which had come out for PC with some very good 3D graphics for its time.
This game was a revolution back then, given that it immersed the players in the experiences aboard these ships that had been seen so many times in the movies. Even today, the Vandal website highlights that a group of fans is recreating this installment of space fights with new graphic technologies.
Star Wars: TIE Fighter (1994)
In this case, we see an interesting PC title, as we take command of the Empire's perspective, who are considered the "bad guys" of the franchise. Therefore, it was a game that appears between the events of Episode V and Episode VI, after the victory of Darth Vader in the frozen regions of Hoth.
The player followed the adventures of Maarek Stele, battling space pirates, some rebel factions of the Empire, and fighting the Rebellion. The graphics were very polished for its time, so the gameplay was quite good and can be enjoyed even today.

Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader (2001)
This GameCube game offered everything fans had hoped for – spectacular graphics and addictive gameplay . Being a sequel to the first version, the atmosphere felt really galactic and elements of tactics were added, such as the possibility of organizing a squad.
The specialized website of GamerFocus considers that it is "a refined battle in the skies", since iconic battles could be revisited, as happened in Endor, Yavin or the Death Star, piloting ships with very different characteristics . Will Star Wars: Squadrons be able to improve what was seen previously in terms of gameplay and adapt it to the current graphic technology? At the moment, it could be possible.
