The announcement

It was a publication that the dukes made from their Instagram account in which a picture of the two of them walking and with a title that announced that they are retiring as senior members of the Royal Family. They also claim that they claim to be economically independent but that they will continue to support Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. They also talk that they will share their time and their lives between the United Kingdom and North America with the intention of raising their son Archie among the real traditions in which he was born but also delved into the next chapter they plan for his life.

The dukes say that this is a decision made after a few months of reflection and discussion and that they do it with the support of the inhabitants of the United Kingdom. They will also found a new charity.

What does it mean?

Many have speculated about the nature of this separation between the marriage and the Royal Family. The truth is that the Dukes of Sussex will remain part of the monarchy. However, as 'senior' members, they are prohibited from obtaining jobs or pursuing professional careers outside of monarchical tasks. The dukes, then, are renouncing such titles so that they are allowed economic independence. This figure already exists in the Royal Family: Princesses Beatriz and Eugenia have full-time jobs while fulfilling their real tasks. Never, however, had a member of the Royal Family as popular as Harry (the second most popular after the queen) had been economically separated from the crown. This will mean that the Dukes of Sussex will no longer receive their real salary, which comes out of the English treasury.

After the announcement on Instagram, the dukes launched their official website, in which they explain in more detail the nature of their decision. They will rehearse for the upbringing of their child a new work model in which they will take care of themselves economically.

What does the Queen think?

A statement from the Queen was released after the announcement of her grandson and his wife. In it, it is said that discussions with the dukes are just beginning and that this is a more complicated matter than would be believed. Many, in effect, have read this act of Harry and Meghan as a gesture of rebellion before the monarchical norms and traditions that although they have given them many privileges, it also controls them and the way in which they should live their lives.
