Michael Jackson: the King lives on through Latin music

It is no secret that Michael Jackson completely revolutionized the music industry. The influence of the American artist did not stop with his passing, as it did not stay within the borders of his home country.  This year, the singer would have been 59 years old. In honor of his birthday, we look for influence of his work in Latin music.

Latin American music tends to lean towards something you can dance to,it's fast paced and joyful, very much like U.S. pop. Up-beat songs like “Beat It” and “Billy Jean” paved the way for sounds that we identify today as Latin pop. Divas like Paulina Rubio have probably been influenced by the American artist, even if the connection is not as evident. Most Latin American pop combines sounds like the ones Michael Jackson produced with hints of more traditional beats. This combination results in top hits like “Despacito”.

In the 80’s, Jackson’s golden age, bands like Soda Stereo and Los Fabulosos Cádilacs were also in their prime. The influence of U.S. pop rock is evident in the sounds of these bands and of the general spirit of the decade; it is likely that these Hispanic music legends were listening to the King of Pop while creating their own unique fusion.

To this day, Latin America is home to many Michael Jackson fans. It is not strange to hear his songs playing in stores, bars, parties, and over the radio. The world may have lost him in 2009, but his legacy lives on.
