“She-Hulk: Attorney at Law”: A Refreshing Marvel Comedy

Marvel Studios continues to introduce new characters to its cinematic universe looking forward to a totally revamped future. For this occasion, the miniseries "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law" presents a superheroine who will try to stand out from the rest, and to do so she will not only use her superhuman strength, but also her intelligence and humor.

In this plot we will follow the life of Jennifer Walters, a talented and very professional lawyer who aims to be the best at her job. However, her lifestyle suddenly changes when she accidentally acquires the same powers as the Hulk, who turns out to be her cousin. Between her vocation for the law and her obligation to become a heroine, she will have to balance her emotions to do good around her.

Actress Tatiana Maslany is in charge of playing She-Hulk, one of the most beloved characters in Marvel comics for her charisma and interaction with the audience. Along with her, some familiar faces will also participate, such as the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Abomination (Tim Roth), Wong (Benedict Wong) and Daredevil (Charlie Cox), as well as new characters such as Titania (Jameela Jamil) and Nikki Ramos (Ginger Gonzaga).

The antithesis of the superhero

If there is something that differentiates "She-Hulk" from other new productions of Phase 4, such as "Moon Knight" or "Ms. Marvel", it is that it has the spirit of a television series and not of a movie divided into several episodes. That is what director Jessica Gao is aiming for. She will have the difficult mission of pleasing an entire community with a show that will prioritize humor over action and drama.

The world of entertainment accustomed us to the fact that comedy series should last about 30 minutes, and in fact that will be the approximate duration of the nine chapters of this miniseries. In its premiere, "She-Hulk" manages to lay the foundations of its story effectively and quickly, in addition to applying a characteristic resource of comics such as the fourth wall break. As soon as five minutes go by, Jennifer speaks directly to the camera to explain how it all came about.

The narrative flows so smoothly that in the blink of an eye you realize you're halfway through the episode. The inclusion of Smart Hulk here is decisive for the plot and also hooks the public once and for all, who know from the trailers that there will be more high-profile cameos. The chemistry between Ruffalo and Maslany is evident and shows the strong family bond between Bruce and Jennifer.

A point to highlight and that, obviously, will not go under the table is the fact that Jennifer has no intention of becoming a superhero. Unlike what her cousin went through, she is able to control her anger and therefore her transformation into She-Hulk, a situation that is well handled with scenes that bring out several smiles. Therefore, his only wish is to return to his normal life and fight evil from the courts.

Everything seems to indicate that this premiere season will serve to give the UCM a different approach. As mentioned above, the appearance of well-known characters will be the attraction of a production that is focused on parodying its own universe and in turn giving Phase 4 a fresh air. Perhaps, in that detail its formula could fail and for consequently generating a wave of negative criticism.

At the time, the CGI gave something to talk about when they released the trailer, something that they improved a lot in the first episode. Likewise, other critics point to a very docile characterization of She-Hulk, compared to the aggressive nature of the Hulk himself. However, we should keep in mind that the style of the protagonist is more charismatic and feminist.

"She-Hulk: Defender of Heroes" is a production for the whole family and can be enjoyed mostly by the youngest. With her, Phase 4 at the series level is closed, but in reality it is only the beginning for a different character who will surely also appear on the big screen.
