This Sunday, February 9, the Academy Awards took place in Los Angeles. Although some were quite predictable, this year there were a couple of surprises and especially a lot of music, many presentations.
Here we summarize the night in the five most relevant moments of the ceremony so that he finds out the good, the bad and the ugly of the Oscar in case you did not watch them.
Natalie Portman dresses in favor of women
One of the most commented looks of the red carpet was that of actress Natalie Portman. Not only did she look beautiful with a black dress with lace in a golden veil, but with her dress she made reference to one of the controversies that the Oscar nominees unleashed a while ago: the absence of women in the category of Best Director. The cape worn by the actress on Sunday was embroidered with the names of some directors who were not nominated, that is, ignored by the Academy.
Among the names is that of Lulu Wang, who directed The Farewell, a film generally ignored in the Oscar; Greta Gerwig, director of Little Women, nominated for Best Film; Lorene Scarfania, director of Hustlers, also ignored in this awards season; and Mati Diop, director of Atlantiques, nominated last year for the Golden Palm.
Eminem makes a surprise show
This version of the Oscar Awards was especially musical. Janelle Monae was in charge of opening the prizes with a potpourri about the nominated films of which Billy Porter was also part. As usual, in addition, the songs nominated for Best Original Song were performed on the Oscar stage.

Among these were the interpretations of Indina Menzel, Cynthia Erivo and Elton John. The audience and the audience were also surprised with a show in the middle of the ceremony that had not been announced before: Eminem sang his song "Sing for the moment". Although the meaning of his performance was not very well explained in the middle of the ceremony, Eminem made a great presentation accompanied by an orchestra.
Billie Eilish pays tribute to those who left us this year
One of the most anticipated moments of the night was the presentation of Billie Eilish. The singer along with her brother Fineas were in charge of in memoriam, for which they sang "Yesterday" of the Beatles while the faces and names of those who died this year were projected on the stage screen. The presentation was of a somewhat exaggerated solemnity.
Joaquín Phoenix's environmentalist, antispecist and vegan discourse
As expected, Joaquin Phoenix won the Oscar for Best Actor for his interpretation of the Joker. What did surprise was his sense of acceptance speech. Looking very affected and almost running out of words, the actor explained that he wanted to take advantage of that platform, that voice that was granted today, to make visible a problem.
He talked about how far we are from the natural world and what, according to him, humanity can achieve if it becomes more compassionate. He did animalistic and environmental activism in the middle of the Oscar stage, bravo!
Parasite sweeps
The South Korean film took some of the most important awards of the evening: Best Original Screenplay, Best International Film, Best Director and Best Film. It is the first time that a South Korean production takes the prize of the largest category.
Parasite makes history and opens the doors not only for critics but for the audience to see and demand more Korean cinema, which is a very strong industry in this country. Bong Joon Ho, the director of the film, gave all his speeches in Korean, which also made the ceremony more interesting, as it destroyed it to another world and another industry.
