Venezuela Announces Reestablishment of Military Relations with Colombia

Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López announced that by order of President Nicolás Maduro, there will be immediate contact with his counterpart Iván Velásquez Gómez, the new Colombian defense minister. The idea is to restore military relations and military cooperation between the two countries.

Both countries had announced since before the inauguration of Gustavo Petro, that the intentions of both governments would be to normalize relations. Apparently, the first will be in military matters, but it is expected that they will soon be normalized at all other levels.
"I have received instructions from the commander in chief of the FANB (Bolivarian National Armed Forces), Nicolás Maduro, to establish immediate contact with the Colombian Defense Minister to reestablish our military relations," said the head of the Venezuelan military portfolio during an act of delivery and reception of vice ministries in the state of Lara.
Bilateral relations have been broken since 2019 due to differences between the administration of Iván Duque and the regime of Nicolás Maduro. Since then, Colombia had tried to recognize only Juan Guaidó as Venezuelan president, but it did not go beyond a single symbolic act.
