A study published by the Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice AC of Mexico released the results of a study where 50 cities around the world were evaluated in terms of security, theft rate, homicides and aggressions against people; several cities of Latin America did not receive positive feedback.

Of those 50 cities, 42 are in Latin America, the other eight are located in the United States (4), in South Africa (3), and in Jamaica (1). The figure for this part of America is alarming, but especially for Mexico, where, in addition to being in the region with the most violence in the streets, five cities of the Aztec country are among the ten most violent in the world, a bit strong to digest in the nation that for these weeks has begun to use the 'Law of internal security', which gives the military power to do the work of the police; a decree that has been questioned both by citizens and by the United Nations.

This ranking is based on cities with more than 300 thousand inhabitants and does not include countries that are going through war, such as Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Yemen, among others. The study emphasizes the collection of data from Venezuela, since the government has given unfinished figures, the Citizen Council has taken data obtained by alternatives, such as from several NGOs of the Bolivarian country.

The results of the study were based on the homicide rate of each city per 100 thousand inhabitants and these were the ten cities with the highest death rates:

  1. Los Cabos, Mexico (Rate of 111.3)
  2. Caracas, Venezuela (111.1)
  3. Acapulco, Mexico (106.6)
  4. Natal, Brazil (102.5)
  5. Tijuana, Mexico (100.7)
  6. La Paz, Mexico (84.7)
  7. Fortaleza, Brazil (83.4)
  8. Victoria, Mexico (83.3)
  9. Ciudad Guayana, Venezuela (80.2)
  10. Belém, Brazil (71.3)

As observed, Mexico with five cities, Brazil with three, and Venezuela with two are the countries that enclose the ten most violent cities in the world; the challenge for the region seems to be overwhelming.

However, several cities in El Salvador and Honduras, which in a 2017 study appeared in a ranking that touched on the same theme, do not appear in the current one, at least among the top ten, which is why their security policies are considered an example for other governments to adhere to in terms of citizen security.
