What is AMLO's solution to the devastating violence in Mexico?

According to the last message provided by the organization Semáforo Delictivo, during the first quarter of this year, homicides in Mexico increased by 10%, equivalent to approximately 8,500 murders.

According to Santiago Roel, president of the organization, states such as Baja California, Chiguagua, Aguas Calientes, Guanajuato, Colima, Morelos, Tabasco, and Quintana Roo are the areas in which a greater wave of violence has been unleashed due to the constant clashes between 'carteles' like Jalisco Nueva Generación and the armed forces. In these, countless complaints were filed for abuses and forced disappearances by the army and federal police.

So, what are the solutions that the Mexican Government proposes to end such countless deaths?

National Peace and Security Plan

This strategy that, according to López Obrador will begin to give results in the next six months, consists of five key points:

1. Absolution and pacification of 'carteles'

According to the Secretary of Security and Protection of the Mexican Government, Alfonzo Durazo, the idea of strengthening laws and extending large numbers of sailors, police, and soldiers has not yielded any positive results.

For this reason, the strategy is to promote special laws of pacification, "to put an end to armed confrontations, enable disarmament and the surrender of offenders", where those who accept could have reductions of punishment for the crimes committed.

2. Legalization of drugs

Another point of the plan to pacify the violence in the country is to renew the policies of drug consumption, because until now maintaining a total ban has been one of the main reasons for the increase in violence in the Mexican nation.

For this reason, AMLO offers a new support program for people suffering from an addiction. In fact, Senator Olga Sánchez made a proposal to legalize the cultivation of marijuana for recreational and medicinal purposes.

3. National Guard

Although AMLO said during the presentation of the plan that "Violence cannot be faced with violence", this strategy consists of creating a security body that will have 80,000 combatants who will move from police and military units. The nation will be divided into 266 regions, in which specific security plans will be applied for each zone.

4. Fight against corruption

In the words of the current Mexican president, "Nothing has harmed Mexico more than the dishonesty of its rulers. Because of corruption, there is poverty, there is insecurity, there is violence. "So the new National Peace and Security Plan obliges all public officials to submit a declaration of assets, taxes, and conflicts of interest.

Likewise, any type of privilege or protection will be suppressed to those who hold a high position in the government.

5. Liberation and human rights

According to data from the Ministry of the Interior, in Mexico, there are currently more than 37,000 missing persons, where most of the cases remain unpunished.

Due to the fact that a large part of the complaints regarding missing persons blame the military forces, the idea of creating a program to regulate the use of public force, especially for these officials, is considered.

In the same way, the Plan seeks to punish all cases of forced disappearance or torture, which is one of the most pointed issues of international organizations towards the Mexican Government.

Have the National Peace and Security Plan achieved any results?

According to Lopez Obrador's assertions, the state-owned oil and gas production and marketing company in Mexico, Pemex, suffered an average theft of 56,000 barrels of gasoline, which has caused about $ 3 billion in losses.

So, to combat this crime, the government decided to close the valves of four of the main pipelines that supplied gasoline to 10 of the country's 32 states, so it extended approximately 4,000 federal and marine police that could monitor the pipelines. According to the president, of the 80,000 barrels of gasoline stolen daily in November 2018, it has been reduced to 2,000 in the last two months.

On the other hand, López Obrador created the Truth Commission to investigate the disappearance of 43 students from the Rural Normal School of Ayotzinapa, one of the most disastrous events in the history of the country that occurred on September 26, 2014 in Iguala, Mexico.

This is because the statements of former President Enrique Peña Nieto were rejected, as his response was a simple statement in which he reported that the students were victims of a fatal controversy among drug gangs.

So the current president assures that the program has the objective of "knowing the truth and punishing those responsible, the material and intellectual authors".
