Only 43 Latin Americans have won an Oscar since its creation in 1929, although several of them have achieved it on multiple occasions, there are some directors who have stood out even in the Hollywood environment, but not only taking awards as best directors but also making their works the best in terms of photographs, script and of course the best film – and not necessarily foreign – who are these great Latin American directors?

The Mexican director and screenwriter is known mainly for the creativity and peculiarity of his films, especially when it comes to creating particular characters such as Hellboy, El laberinto del fauno, or The Shape of Water. This last film gave Guillermo del Toro his first Oscars when in 2018 he won as Best Film of the Year and Best Director, this film also gave him other awards such as Best Director at the Golden Globes and BAFTAs. In total, del Toro has won 98 accolades and 131 award nominations around the world.
The Alley of Lost Souls is the name that the next film by Guillermo del Toro will receive, a psychological thriller film produced by Searchlight Pictures – owned by Disney – and which will have presence of Bradley Cooper, according to GQ magazine this film It will be released on December 3, 2021.

Another important film director -and also of commercials- born in Mexico, behind great films such as Biutiful, Birdman, and of course, Revenant. The latter gave Leonardo DiCaprio the Oscar for Best Actor and of course filled the Mexican with awards for best director at the Oscars, Golden Globe, BAFTA among many others. However, his film Birdman also won him several awards, at the Oscars he won the statuette for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Film of the year, he also won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay. In total IMDb points out that Iñárritu has won 120 awards and 162 nominations.
Currently, Iñárritu is working on a new film recorded in Mexico called Limbo, due to the recent filming details are not yet known, but according to Sensacine review, the main theme of the film will consist of the political and social situation in the country.

Yes, the other great Latin American director also comes from Mexico, Cuarón is the most successful Latino in the world of cinema with 255 awards and 196 nominations for his work directing, writing and producing films. Born in Argentina and nationalized Chilean, Leilo is a director, writer and film editor who, despite not being so well known, has an Oscar for Best Foreign Film in his window for his film A Fantastic Woman , which he won in 2018. Leilo has won 35 awards and 37 nominations according to IMDb and is currently working on Bride , a film that will star Scarlett Johansson and produced by Apple in conjunction with A24 Films, this film will be based on The Bride of Frankenstein , there is no estimated date yet premiere, according to La Tercera.
