Space Jam 2 is underway. The film, which will be called Space Jam: A New Legacy , will appear as a continuation of the masterful first installment, released in 1996. This first film was a real commercial success, as it mixed the most iconic characters of the Looney Tunes with the best basketball player of that time: Michael Jordan .

The combination of live action with cartoons was a success, to the point where, more than two decades after its premiere, it was once again all the rage on the Netflix platform, after Michael Jordan's documentary series came to light. Therefore, it was not surprising that they wanted to make a continuation that encompasses the new generations.

The new production would premiere on July 14, 2021, almost 25 years after the original delivery. Despite the fact that some important issues would remain, which make the essence of the franchise, there were also other announcements that were a real controversy regarding this film. So we decided to find out everything that is known about Space Jam 2.

Information about Space Jam 2

The first thing to say is that the announcement about Space Jam 2 had been made in 2014 , where it was announced that this film would feature LeBron James, current star of the Los Angeles Lakers and one of the best basketball players today.

However, the plans for a sequel were already in mind from the moment the first part was released. The problem was not having a real star who was a true legacy for the figure of Michael Jordan, although now it seems that they already found him at strong heir.

This new film, to be directed by Malcolm D. Lee, would depart from the original story by presenting a completely different world. Here we will meet Bronny, the figure's son, who dreams of being a video game developer, who will be trapped with his father in virtual reality, where all the Warner Bros. characters exist.

In the cast, it was confirmed the appearance of Don Cheadle and Sonequa Martin-Green, who will have important characters . As for the figures of this sport, the NBA's own website assured that Klay Thompson, Damian Lillard and Anthony Davis are ready to make their appearances. The same would happen with the players Diana Taurasi, Nneka and Chiney Ogwumike.

What is unknown for now, is the appearance of Michael Jordan. Obviously, it would be a real surprise that they will try to save to surprise the public, but it should not be surprising that it has an appearance in the film. Precisely, the idea of the “new legacy” would refer to the fact that both films would be connected and Jordan could give way to the new generation, which would be LeBron James.

In addition to this, the announcement of this film was full of controversy. In the first place, it all happened when Lola Bunny's new look was known. The character, who first appeared in the original film, became the symbol of a femme fatale in animation. However, for this occasion they decided to change their appearance to "not sexualize" it.

Precisely, the director of this film, Malcolm D. Lee, acknowledged that the changes in her image are due to the search for her to be a female character, but without the need for her design to be sexualized , even more so considering that she is a kids movie. However, it is not the only thing that would change from the original film.

While the entire cast of cartoons from the original film would remain, there is one character who will not appear in the sequel. We talk about Pepe Le Pew, the skunk who was accused of representing the culture of harassment. Therefore, to give it a more current approach, they decided to cancel their appearance in this sequel.

For the rest, Space Jam 2 will seek to give a new approach to a work that became a cult classic, both for its comic sense and for the possibility of seeing sports stars living with cartoons. It remains to be seen if this film manages to surpass its predecessor, although expectations for seeing the return of the most famous cartoons are high.
