Since 2010, July 15 is the International Day of Appropriate Technologies, a date agreed by the group Engineers Without Borders that seeks to recognize the advances that have taken place in recent years in appropriate technologies. These are technologies that are developed from the resources that exist in the specific place where they are used, thinking about their sustainability, the cost-benefit relation and the prioritization of needs, in order to avoid unnecessary expenses.
These have the ability to adapt to the needs of people, so that they can be used and exploited in the best way in the daily life of the communities that use them. Thus, the use of expensive and imported technologies is avoided. These technologies arise in response to a clear need: traditional technologies are not usually sustainable and their maintenance is very expensive in less developed countries.
