Encanto has been a real success for Disney. The animated film, which delves into Colombian culture, is sweeping box offices worldwide. For example, the film continues to be among the most viewed in theaters in the United States, Canada and Colombia, among other countries, where in just five days it obtained more than 12.7 million dollars.

Well, apart from the cinematographic successes, an important value must be highlighted: the musical component. Encanto is a film in which the music takes on special importance, but there is one particular theme that drove fans crazy and that has caused a real “boom” at Disney like we haven’t seen for several years.

We are referring to “We don’t talk about Bruno”, which is Disney’s biggest musical success in the United States since 1995. This song obtained the first position on the Billboard Hot 100, a world ranking of the most listened to songs, in addition to being the theme most listened to in this country. Currently, it exceeds 29 million streams and 8,000 downloads in US markets alone.

It should be noted that Encanto was released at the end of November 2021 and is currently available on Disney Plus, which is why it would not be surprising if this success continues for the next few years. weeks. Since there hasn’t been such a big hit since Pocahontas’s “Colors in the Wind,” everything would indicate that it’s the clear favorite to win best piece of music at this year’s Oscars, right?

Well the answer is no. Despite topping several lists worldwide, it was not shortlisted for the Oscars for Best Song. Instead, “Dos oruguitas” was chosen, played by the popular Sebastián Yatra. Disney opted for the romantic theme and left the other song without options.

The problem had to do with poor organization on the part of Disney. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences closes all calls for its awards on November 1. As we had told you, the film was released on November 25, 2021, so they had to make the decision before seeing the reception of the public and critics.

So, Disney thought that Yatra’s song would have a better chance of winning. However, later we could see that the real “boom” was in the other song by the composer Lin-Manuel Miranda, so Disney could not change the preselection of his ternate song.

At this point, you may be wondering: why not nominate both songs? Well, the rules of the Oscars are somewhat complex. To avoid the saturation of compositions from the same film in a given shortlist, the Academy imposed that there cannot be more than two songs for the same award, regardless of who their authors are.

That is, the rules allowed Disney to choose these two songs. However, this would imply dividing the votes, which reduces the chances of winning a statuette. So, before the release of the tape, he made the controversial decision to choose Yatra’s song (also composed by Miranda), which ultimately hasn’t achieved such resounding success as the other one.

In this sense, “We don’t talk about Bruno” would have had its own merits to win the Oscar statuette. Basically, it is a song with a strong theme, as it tells the story of Bruno, the clairvoyant uncle that everyone tries to hide. This reflects the problems of many families, where there is a member who is “unspoken”.

In the same way, it is a quite complex theme in terms of music, since it unites multiple voices and styles. For example, the rhythm of salsa is combined with chachachá, in addition to having influences from rap and trap. That mix captured the ears of millions around the world, but sadly it won’t get its chance at this celebration.

It should be noted that the official nominations for the Oscars will be announced on February 8. Among the titles that can get a win are Belfast, The power of the dog, Being the Ricardos, King Richard, Don’t Look Up, Licorice Pizza and Spencer, among others. The ceremony will take place on March 27, with a possible host after three years.

And you, do you think it’s unfair that “We don’t talk about Bruno” is not nominated for these Oscars?
