Nequi is one of the most popular digital financial platforms in Colombia. The app has become an essential necessity for freelancers, small and medium-sized businesses, and even street vendors. With the increasing digitization of the economy, it is key to have this resource to pay when you do not have cash.

For this reason, every time the application “crashes” (stops working) the lives of thousands of users are considerably affected. Has it happened to you? Well, here we come to explain to you why these Nequi fails happen frequently.

There is no unique reason

Digital platforms suffer from multiple problems to maintain their operation and there is not a unique cause for that. Taking this into account, there are several factors that affect the operation of Nequi.

One of the most common reasons is user overload. Especially on fortnights, banking platforms experience a greater number of clients doing all kinds of actions within them, which causes them to become congested. In other words, the system requests, made by the visitors, exceed the processing capacity resources of the application. On a salary payment day, it is estimated that Nequi users make more than 5,000 transactions per second. These are millions of transactions that the system sometimes just won’t be able to handle.

This problem has worsened with the increase in users caused by the pandemic and is something that the creators of Nequi must constantly work on.

Problem with the cloud

Sometimes, Nequi crashes are not even related to the application itself, but to problems in Amazon Web Services. AWS is a provider of cloud services that allows applications like Nequi to have storage, computing resources and databases. AWS customers can rent a server, to process their data there, instead of having to invest in their own servers. Essentially, it is like “renting” a computer to carry out the processes that your business requires in the cloud.

A truly incredible amount of services depend on Amazon Web Services, so much so that it is estimated that 32% of the cloud infrastructure services market belongs to Jeff Bezos’ company. This includes companies like Netflix, Twitch, Linkedin, Facebook, ESPN, Adobe, The BBC, Disney + and also Nequi.

For this reason, a major failure in Amazon Web Services will also result in a failure in Nequi. In these cases, the only thing you can do is be patient.

How to anticipate a crash?

For the reasons mentioned above, it is important not to depend on Nequi for your transactions all the time. It is advisable to have several banking resources at hand, whether they are physical locations or other financial platforms that do not use AWS. For example, PayPal uses the cloud services of Google Cloud.

On the other hand, you can take actions to minimize failures in Nequi that are not related to the two cases mentioned above. Keeping the app up to date, as well as your phone’s operating system, can help you avoid app crashes.
