The war in Ukraine is not over yet, and while the Russian troops are retreating on Ukrainian territory before the advance of the Ukrainian forces, Putin annexed 4 provinces in the east of the invaded country. This move has been widely discussed, since it is unusual for an annexation to take place when there is no full control of the territory.

This is what Putin Seeks with the annexation of Kherson, Donetsk, Lugansk and Zaporizhia.

Ukrainian Territories Annexed by Russia

Despite not having full control in Lugansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhia and Kherson by the Russian army, the annexation by Putin seems a desperate measure of the Russian president. International media highlight the increase in concern in the Russian media, Putin's allies are beginning to see with concern the future of the war in Ukraine and that the Kremlin continues to call it a "special operation".

However, it is also feared that when cornered, Putin or the Russian leadership will consider the use of nuclear weapons (of any kind) to avoid a catastrophe.

For now, the West has supplied equipment, training and weapons to the Ukrainian army as a defense measure and to recover lost territories. NATO and the European Union would not support a Ukrainian invasion of Russian territory, but Crimea, annexed since 2014, is a question mark. The peninsula is considered as national territory by Ukraine and Russia.
