There are stories whose most remarkable aspect lies in the power of the message they manage to build. “Luckiest Girl Alive” is one of those stories. This outlines the emotional journey that a victim must take to face the traumas that violent events have left in their lives. Since its premiere, the proposal of this Netflix dramatic thriller has quickly captured the attention of the users of the platform and has appeared in the top positions of the streaming service.

“Luckiest Girl Alive” is based on the 2015 bestselling book of the same name by American writer Jessica Knoll. The production stars the film Mila Kunis (“Black Swan”). Directing is Mike Barkertal (“The Handmaid's Tale”). The script was the work of the same author of the novel.

The story of “The luckiest girl in the world”

The film places us in New York City in 2015 and introduces Ani Fanelli, a woman whose life seems to be in an excellent moment. She is an editor at a popular women's magazine and has a chance to work at The New York Times. In addition, in a few weeks she will marry a handsome, affectionate and high-status man. This woman has been in charge of taking her steps along a path that makes it clear to everyone that she is successful. However, the stability of her life begins to shake when a filmmaker insists that she participate in a documentary he is preparing about a mass shooting that occurred at the elite high school where she studied. She is the only one of the survivors of the attack who has never made a public statement. Her silence, plus the fact that at first she was identified as an accomplice in the attack and then acquitted, have caused her name to falter in public opinion. Ani must face her past, the emotions it generates in her, and decide whether to share her side of the story.

At the beginning of the film, Ani seems to be just a woman full of ambitions and tricks, but as the story progresses we discover that behind that facade of perfection hides a person with deep wounds. A trauma weighs on her that has taken root over the years. The film uses first-person narration to introduce us to the mind of this character and show us an internal world full of dilemmas and pain.

The film builds much of its story through the use of flashbacks. Thus we go from an adult Ani who must face certain emotions to meet a teenage Ani (Chiara Aurelia) who struggles to fit in with her classmates, who marginalize her for being a scholarship student at the elite educational center.

In "Luckiest Girl Alive" there is a double mystery, and the story leads to the discovery of whether or not they are related. One serious question is whether Ani had any reason to have been an accessory to the shooting in any way.

The film is a dark and disturbing drama. It has sensitive and heartbreaking scenes that have impacted many viewers. This is a story that exposes the intimacy of the victim. As we enter Ani's mind, we meet a voice silenced by years, pain and prejudice. The film precisely draws that journey from silence to raising one's voice.

In short, "Luckiest Girl Alive" manages to build a story with a tone and message that the audience liked. This is a film that has the potential to impress whoever sees it and that invites reflection on various important issues.
