Boris Johnson has announced his resignation as UK Prime Minister after a scandal-ridden three-year tenure. Johnson made this decision after a massive resignation of more than 50 members at all levels of his government, including Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.
The rebellion by cabinet members began after it emerged that Johnson knew in 2019 of misconduct allegations against Chris Pincher, the Conservative Party's chief discipline officer, and still appointed him to his post in February. Pincher was accused of allegedly groping two men while drunk.
It is not the first scandal that splashes the president of the United Kingdom. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, he insisted that his staff followed all the social distancing rules put in place by the government, but it came to light that he had thrown a series of parties with his team.
Although the main cause of his resignation is the questioning of his integrity, the truth is that Johnson achieved several political successes during his time as Prime Minister. For example, during his mandate Brexit was carried out, the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union. Some have even called him his country's most successful Conservative leader since Margaret Thatcher.
Opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer said Johnson's departure was "good news for the country" and that he was "responsible for fraud, scandals and lies on an industrial scale."
