However, they fell short of encompassing more recent lunar history. This limitation is where the Chinese Chang'e-5 mission changed the game.
Lunar samples returned to Earth by the Chang'e-5 mission have yielded valuable information about relatively young volcanic activity dating back approximately 2 billion years. This treasure trove of samples contains compositions of materials distinct from those observed previously.
The research team achieved this breakthrough by employing a state-of-the-art approach, precisely estimating the contents of major elements on the lunar surface. They accomplished this by integrating data from Chang'e-5, Apollo, and Luna missions into a deep learning-based model.
