German President warns of the internal and external challenges of the EU

"There is nothing to indicate that things will be quieter in the future," Steinmeier said during a lunch with Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at Bellevue Castle in Berlin.

The president of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said that the new president of the Commission of the European Union (EU), the German Ursula von der Leyen, will face major internal and external challenges.

The German president warned that "a united Europe is challenged both internally and externally."

Steinmeier said the unfortunate exit of the United Kingdom from the EU will require a lot of energy, and placed climate, migration or security policies as priority issues for the new European Commission (EC).

The president stressed that in these difficult times, Germany is happy "to know that it has a trusted European partner in Portugal at its side".

Likewise, Steinmeier celebrated that both countries are united by a strong commitment to European unification and by their willingness to face the challenges in a constructive and concrete way.
