Venezuela slams meddling in Its affairs by OAS Secretary General
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez denounced on Monday at the headquarters of the Organization of American States in Washington that OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and several member countries are guilty of interfering in the affairs of the Venezuelan government.
“I’m not wrong when I state that Sr. Almagro is a liar, a criminal and a mercenary” who “obsessively attacks Venezuela and its people,” Rodriguez said during an extraordinary session of the OAS Permanent Council.
“If these aggressions against Venezuela continue, we will take severe and definitive action,” the Venezuelan minister said.
The session was called at the request of the Venezuelan government, and was held the day before the OAS Permanent Council was to “consider the situation in Venezuela,” following the demand signed by 14 member countries that it set a date for its elections and free its political prisoners.
“We warn the international community not to be fooled by the fake idea that they’re not really attacking Venezuela, they just want to discuss the situation in Venezuela,” Rodriguez said.
The 14 signatory countries plus several others involved are Canada, Argentina, Barbados, Bahamas, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Santa Lucia, United States and Uruguay.
“Almagro doesn’t operate alone. He is carrying out orders dictated from this city (Washington),” Rodriguez said.
Her speech came just hours after the chief justice of the Venezuelan Supreme Court, Maikel Moreno, urged the government to demand Almagro’s dismissal as OAS secretary general for “aggression against the people” and the constitution of Venezuela.
