Leer en español: Todo lo que sabemos de Selena: la serie
The date is almost here: December 4. This will be the premiere date of Selena: the series. A few weeks ago the protagonist of this series announced through her social networks the release date of this long-awaited series. Now we have an official trailer. After the success of her songs and after the success of the movie that told her life, now comes an official series from the streaming giant. Here is everything we know so far.
Who was Selena Quintanilla?
Without a doubt the queen of tex-mex. She is the singer of hits like "Como la flor" or "Amor prohibido". She was very famous in the nineties and died very young, at 23 years old. Selena Quintanilla sang first in English, her mother tongue. However, seeing the opportunity that singing in Spanish could give her, her father began to promote this in her, and together with her band, made up mainly of other members of her family, they wrote some of the best-known hits of Mexican pop.
What is the series about?
The official Netflix synopsis reads:
Before she became the queen of Tex-Mex music, Selena Quintanilla was a young woman from Texas with big dreams and an impressive voice. “Selena: The Series” explores the transition to maturity of this unmatched performer: from her beginnings singing at small events with her family, to her transformation into the most successful Latin female artist of all time, as well as years of effort and sacrifices the Quintanillas had to go through before Selena's meteoric rise to fame became a reality. Starring Christian Serratos, Gabriel Chavarria, Ricardo Chavira, Noemí Gonzalez and Seidy López. The first in this two-part series premieres on Netflix on December 4, 2020.
Thus, we will see the life of the young Selena from her childhood years, since it was since then that her father perceived her undeniable talent. The series will not only focus on the central figure of Selena, but will also show the family environment in which she grew up and that helped catapult her to fame. Thus, we will also see the dramas that surrounded the band of the Dinos, along with the one that Selena sang in. The trailer shows a happy and nostalgic tone for the 90s Tex-Mex that became a boom in this decade. This same tone is also perceived in another of Netflix's great Latin American successes: Luis Miguel: the series, so we might suspect that this production is part of a larger Netflix project to make biographies of great Latin American stars, in the style of soap operas that can be seen on national television.

Other biographies
Unforgettable for many was also Jennifer Lopez's performance as Selena in the 1997 film, which was released just two years after the young Selena's murder.
The production, 90s like her songs, also has a festive and joyous tone but soon turns gloomy and serious, when it touches the subject of the circumstances surrounding her death. This tone cannot be perceived in the trailer of the Netflix series, perhaps because this first season will only surround Selena's childhood and early youth and not yet the international fame and betrayal of the one who murdered her. In any case, as in the film, the series will be spoken in English and Spanish, just as Selena spoke, who had to learn Spanish phonetically to please her Spanish-speaking fans. We cannot wait, then, to see this Netflix original production that will undoubtedly be very successful among Anglo and Latin American audiences.
